Thalía Guzmán interviewing Adelita Cantu in her office at UT Health San Marcos Nursing School on Sept. 5, 2022. Patricia Lim
As Doug and Gabriela told me, they chose me for a reason – and I am so grateful they did. Thank you for the support after complications arose. Also, a big thank you to Colleen DeGuzman and Patricia Lim for the constant guidance.
As soon as I got the email, I called my mom. I told her, “Me escogieron!” I learned that it’s okay to be vulnerable and that my work doesn’t have to be perfect the first time around. This was my first time using audio equipment and Adobe Audition. I am excited to keep practicing on my own time. I am grateful for having the opportunity to learn skills I didn’t learn in the classroom. This is the best way to end my last year of undergrad.
I learned to always double check my equipment and to always carry extra batteries. I wish I could’ve asked more questions even if I felt overwhelmed. I learned to apply the soft and hard skills I learned to improve my writing and creative skills.
Coming into this project, I was ready to soak up every bit of advice and lessons from everyone here but I forgot to trust my own instincts. In the end, the people here definitely made me feel that I can do journalism and that I do have a seat at the table.
